LAKELAND | With all four golfers shooting in the 70s on Monday at Cleveland Heights Golf Course, George Jenkins continued its two-year domination in boys high school golf.

The Eagles won the Class 2A, District 8 tournament by 27 strokes over Lakeland High School, with freshman Hayden Hill leading the effort for Jenkins with an even-par 72.

"We won it last year, and backed it up this year,'' said Jenkins assistant coach David Griner. "That's the county title two years in a row, and the district two years in a row.''

While Jenkins ruled the team competition, Ridge Community freshman Sam Horsfield was the medalist with 1-under-par 71. Hill finished second individually, while Garrett Barham of Jenkins, Tim McIntee of Haines City and Colin Walkup of Sebring tied for third with 76s.

"Besides my two double bogeys, I played pretty good,'' Horsfield said. "I hit my irons and my driver really good, and I made a couple of good putts (10-15 feet).''

Horsfield, 15, recorded seven birdies, including his final three holes — No. 8B, 9B and 1C.

Jenkins advanced to the Class 2A regional tournament on Monday at Stoneybrook West Golf Club in Winter Garden along with Lakeland and Sebring.

"I'm definitely excited we're going to regionals,'' Hill said. "It's going to be awesome.''

Jenkins counted Hill's 72, Barham's 76, Devon Hammond's 78 and 79 by Steven Hancock. Trevor Bates carded an 81, which didn't count toward the team's 17-over-par 305 total.

"I'm disappointed that Sam beat me by one shot, but I played good so I'm not complaining,'' said Hill, 15.

The top three teams, and the top three individuals not on those teams, advanced.

Horsfield qualified individually, along with McIntee and Matt Anderson of Kathleen.

At regionals, the top two teams and top two individuals not on one of those teams qualify for the state tournament Nov. 1-2 at Mission Inn Resort & Club at Howey-in-the-Hills.

Class 1A, District 13

AVON PARK | The wind came zipping across River Greens Golf Course midway through Monday's Class 1A, District 13 tournament, but it didn't hamper the top scores.

McKeel Academy junior Rocky Hirsch birdied the last two holes of the par-72 course and led the Wildcats to the district title with 5-over-par 77.

"It (the wind) affected my tee shots and most of the holes on the back nine," Hirsch said. "But on my back nine I shot even. I was kind of getting into the groove and I was more relaxed."

McKeel will now head to the Class 1A, Region 5 tournament next Monday for the second straight season after shooting a tournament-best 326.

"Last year we got nervous at regionals and didn't play too hot. It was the biggest scale we had played on. After the round we wanted to give it a second shot right then. Now we have it," Hirsch said.

Joining the Wildcats at Bardmoor Golf Club in Largo will be second-place All Saints' Academy (338) and third-place Lakeland Christian (341).

"It was good day and it was a rough day. The wind comes off the lake pretty hard," McKeel Academy head coach Matthew Francis said. "But we're expecting to do a little better at regionals this year."

All Saints' Jared Wright led all golfers with 3-over-par 75, and said the 20-mph winds aided his mental game coming across the back end of the course.

"Actually, when the wind picked up my back nine was better than my front nine. But I think it made me focus more," Wright said.

The top three individuals not on regional-qualifying teams also advanced, including: Zachary Horton (Tenoroc), Amir Becker (Avon Park) and Rhett Pooley (Frostproof).
