LAKELAND | Golf is an individual sport. But for one girl, it was about not letting her team down.
Tenoroc junior Kayla Connors fought through illness in the second match of the season because she didn’t want to disappoint her teammates.
“Kayla was sick with shingles at the time,” Tenoroc coach Bryan Tarr said. “She said she wanted to play because we only have four players on the team and if we do not have four players play, then we would have to forfeit the match.”
Connors had her worst round of the season that day, shooting 44. She averaged 39.5 per nine holes for the 2011 season, with a low round of 35. She finished third in the county tournament with an 82 over 18 holes, but won the district tournament by 12 strokes, shooting 75.
At the regional tournament, Connors shot an 82, good enough to be the only Polk County girls golfer to qualify for the state tournament.

At the state tournament, Connors struggled a little, shooting 89 on the first day and following up with 97 on the second day. She finished in 62nd place.
“I definitely would expect to improve on that next year,” Connors said.
Tarr attributed his star player’s success to her strong work ethic.
“Kayla never missed a practice,” Tarr said. “And she would come out and play on days we did not even have practice.”
