SANFORD | Auburndale's Alexis Basgil and Logan Allen held tough in their first-round matches of the Class 2A state tennis tournament early Monday morning, but couldn't pull through with victories, falling early at Sylvan Lake Park.
Basgil, a junior, won the first set against Mourning High School's Nastassia Palivets, 7-5, but dropped the second and third, 2-6, 3-6, in a grind-it-out match that Basgil described as "intense."
"It kept going back and forth," she said. "She kept hitting off these amazing angle shots and I kept diving for it."
Basgil, whose allergies bugged her throughout, fought back in the second set after being down, 4-1. She made it 4-3 but trailed again after Palivets "hit four incredible serves."
Allen, who lost 6-1, 6-1 to Nature Coast's Zenon Kouts, took most of his games to deuce but couldn't pull out winners.
"Every point was close," he said. "But I just couldn't finish. Too many unforced errors."
Basgil and Allen also played doubles matches. Allen and doubles partner Kelsey Ashbrook won their first match against Wakulla, 6-4, 6-4, but lost later in the day to top seed Creekside, 6-0, 6-0.
Allen and Matt McManus lost to the doubles team from Florida State Technical High School, 6-1, 6-1.
