LAKELAND | The Class 5A, District 10 baseball championship came down to which team would capitalize the most on its opportunities to score.
With two good pitchers on the mound, the opportunities were few, but Lake Wales was able to put up three runs in the third inning and went on to beat Auburndale, 3-2, Thursday night at Tenoroc High School.
"They did a good job of exeution," Auburndale coach Tom Taylor said. "The one inning, they put a couple of guys on base, got a couple of key hits and scored their three runs."
Both teams advance to the Class 5A regional quarterfinals next Wednesday. Lake Wales (20-7) will host Merritt Island, while Auburndale (11-14) will travel to Rockledge.
Auburndale scored in the second on an RBI single by Jose Olivero and the third on an RBI single by Brett Taylor.
The Highlanders started the bottom of the third with a single by Zack Gill and two walks to load the bases with no outs. Cockrell drove in one run with a sacrifice fly, Zach Calvin doubled home the second run and the third scored on an infield grounder.
"We've had a lot of one-run games, and our guys stayed loose throughout and had a lot of confidence in their own abilities to get the job done," Lake Wales coach Jasone DeWitt said.
On the mound, Lake Wales' Taylor Cockrell and Auburndale's Burris Warner both pitched complete games.
Cockrell struck out 10 and finished the game retiring seven straight Bloodhound hitters, the last five on strikeouts.
"He's a bulldog," DeWitt said of Cockrell. "We got the lead for him and he wasn't going to relinquish it."
Warner allowed just four hits for the night and retired 11 of the last 12 Auburndale hitters.
