LAKELAND | Zykira Lewis committed to play for University of Central Florida in 2013 late last week. The fact that the school will be playing powerhouses like Connecticut when it moves to the Big East a big factor in her decision.
Lewis, a junior sharp shooter from Bartow, was first in the county in scoring among large schools this year. She also led her team in steals, averaging five a game, and helped the Yellow Jackets get to the regional finals in Class 7A.
If she sticks with the choice to attend and play at UCF, Lewis, a first team All-County selection this year, will join the Golden Knights the same year they move to the Big East, where the team will compete against UCONN, a powerhouse in women's basketball, and Notre Dame, another up-and-coming program which made it to the NCAA Finals this year.
Notre Dame eventually lost to national champions Baylor.
"Coach told me I would be a good fit for their program," Lewis said, in reference to her conversations with UCF's coach, Joi Williams.
"She told me I could have a chance to start. Now I have to just ball hard this year and when I get there."
First, she wants to take care of business in Bartow's district.
Last year, Haines City beat Bartow every time the two teams faced each other in Class 7A, District 7. The rivalry has grown heated at times.
"We need to go to states," Lewis said. "And we need to beat Haines City."
