LAKELAND | Tyler Brown ran for 100 yards and scored the game winning touchdown with 8:50 remaining in the game to lead Lake Gibson over George Jenkins 21-14, before 3,000 fans on a muggy night at Veterans Stadium.
Trey Congdon passed for 152 yards and threw two touchdowns to Eric Carter for the Braves (1-0). Congdon also ran 30 yards and was picked off once by Eagles (0-1) defensive back Lavante Byers.
“We made plays when we had to and our kids made big steps forward tonight,” Lake Gibson coach Keith DeMeyer said. “Our defense also did a great job keeping us in the game.
The Eagles had a lot of chances to win the game if not for the penalties (20 for 167 yards) and two turnovers. George Jenkins running back Trent Rains ran for 66 yards and did his best to get the Eagles the victory, but it wasn’t enough.
George Jenkins led most of the way until early in the fourth quarter when Brown sealed it for the Braves.
Carter finished the game with 100 receiving yards on 8 receptions for Lake Gibson.
George Jenkins will play at Kathleen, while the Braves will travel to Lake Wales to play the Highlanders next Friday night.
