HAINES CITY | Seventh-ranked Winter Haven looked sharp and impressive as it rolled over Haines City 56-7 in front of 400 fans Friday at Joe Stangry Stadium.
Winter Haven's 5-foot-8, 210-pound running back Adam Lane rushed for 194 yards on 12 carries with two touchdowns to lead Winter Haven's offense.
Quarterback Luke Borders was 7-for-8 with one interception for 108 yards. His backup, sophomore Patrick Banner was 3-for-3 for 27 yards with one touchdown.
Winter Haven is ranked seventh in the state in Class-6A by the Associated Press.
Junior receiver Kendrick Holland scored two touchdowns for Winter Haven, including a 50 yard punt return.
The defense was just as sharp, holding Haines City to 129 yards of total offense.
Winter Haven (2-0) racked up 494 total yards.
The Blue Devils posted six sacks against Haines City. "We were just out-manned," said Haines City coach Pete Barber. "We fought and fought and fought. We tried to do some things."
Haines City (1-1) made it competitive just before the half when junior quarterback Ryan Pynes hooked up with with Jarrod Brown on a 5-yard touchdown pass with 25 seconds left before the break.
Haines City kicker Cristobal Benitez missed a 36-yard field goal in the second quarter.
Winter Haven pulled away with 21 points in the third quarter.
"They've got an offensive line that's pretty good," Barber said. "It was a collective effort."
Next week Haines City travels to Fort Meade and Winter Haven heads to George Jenkins.
