SEBRING | Frostproof hit the turnover trifecta but overcame the safety, interception and fumble to top Sebring, 19-8, in a sloppy, rainy game at Firemen's Memorial Field in Sebring on Friday night.
Frostproof freshmen quarterback Xavier Gaines finally got the Bulldogs on the scoreboard late in the second quarter after starting the game with three three-and-out possessions, allowing a safety and field goal that had them down 5-0.
Gaines trotted 23 yards — untouched — into the end zone after connecting with Kaleel Gaines for a 50-yard pass that took the Bulldogs into Blue Streak territory for the first time.
Gaines led the Bulldogs on the ground and in the air, completing 4-of-16 passes for 73 yards and adding 63 yards on six carries.
"He's a very talented football player, but we are trying to get around to calling him a great football player," Frostproof coach Price Harris said. "We want him to take that next step … he's putting in the work … and he's learning more and more every time."
The win means Frostproof starts the season 2-0 again this year after narrowly sneaking into the playoffs last year with a 5-5 record.
Frostproof hosts Desoto County next week.
