HAINES CITY | E'Shawn Davis' 2-yard touchdown run with 4:26 to play was the difference as Ridge Community rallied to defeat Kathleen 20-19 Friday night.
"I thought both teams played a real good game, and we were fortunate to come out with a win", Ridge coach Richard Tate said.
There were four lead changes in the contest as the teams went back and forth in the second half after a first half dominated by defense.
Anthony Ware's 5-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter put Kathleen (2-1) ahead 7-0 and was the lone score of the first half.
Shykeem Pitts' 14-yard touchdown run following a muffed punt early in the third quarter evened the game at seven.
The Bolts (3-0) took their first lead of the night on their next possession; on a third-and-17 play from their own 13-yard line. Quarterback Jourdan Osinskie found Codaryl Pandolfo for an 87-yard score that gave Ridge a 13-7 lead.
It didn't take long for Kathleen to answer as quarterback A'Treyu Farrior found Javon Harrison for a 46-yard score on the first play of the Red Devils' ensuing possession.
The touchdown tied the score at 13-13, and Farrior gave Kathleen the lead about three minutes later on a score from 2 yards out. Omar Carvajal's extra point attempt however, went off the upright and proved costly as Kathleen clung to a 19-13 lead.
The Red Devils forced Ridge Community to go three-and-out on its following possession but quickly returned the favor.
The winning score was set up after a strong punt return from Pitts. The play prior to Davis' go-ahead touchdown, Davis converted a fourth-and-2 with a 9-yard rush. Daniel Delgado's extra point put the Bolts up 20-19 and ahead for good.
Ridge Community will remain home next Friday and host Auburndale.
Kathleen (2-1) will return home to open district play against Winter Haven on Thursday. Both games are at 7 p.m..
