FORT MEADE | The Fort Meade defense came up big on three plays in a 24-19 victory Friday over Haines City in front of 500 fans at Frank S. Battle Field.
First, the Miners' defense blocked a Haines City extra point kick in the third quarter.
With Fort Meade (3-0) leading 24-13 in the fourth, Haines City closed the gap on an eight-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Pynes to Jack Tisdale.
However, the Miners covered the end zone forcing Tisdale out of bounds on the 2-point conversion pass.
The Miner defense also held the Hornets (1-2) to 206 yards of total offense.
In a back and forth game, Miner Ryan Fulse rushed for 121 yards and a touchdown, while Fort Meade quarterback Jay Smith threw for 145 yards and two touchdown passes.
Haines City workhorse Dacorius Law rushed for 102 yards and a touchdown. He also returned a punt 59 yards for a second score.
Injured Miner running back D.J. Clark sat out his second game.
The Miners travel to Bartow next week.
