Kicking It: Panthers Get First Win of The Year Over Avon Park, 9-6

By MATT REINSTETLE

THE LEDGER

MULBERRY | It wasn't pretty, but the Mulberry Panthers were able to come away with their first victory of the year in a 9-6 win over Avon Park Friday.

The Panthers (1-2) rushing attack put up impressive numbers with six rushers combining for 230 yards.

Henry Berry led the Panthers with 15 carries for 79 yards. Cordario Brown scored on a 1-yard run which tied the game at 6 in the second quarter.

"That's what we do and that's what we hang our hat on – the ability to run the ball," Panthers coach Raleigh Jackson said. "That's how we're going to stay in games. That's what we'll do until we develop other parts of our offense. You'll see us continue to run the ball."

Despite the rushing total, Avon Park (0-3) was able to stay in the game because of four Mulberry turnovers — three fumbles and one interception.

Avon Park scored it's only touchdown in the first quarter when Darius Williams caught a 7-yard pass from Ryan Dick in the back of the end zone.

But the score that mattered most was when Noe Guillen kicked a 46-yard field goal to give Mulberry the lead as time expired in the third quarter.

Mulberry will be on the road playing Frostproof next Friday.
