LAKELAND | The George Jenkins Eagles took advantage of a wet field to post a 21-0 victory over Lake Region in the Class 7A, District 7 opener for both teams.
After coming out with more focus this week, the Eagles (1-3, 1-0) rushed for 233 yards with three different rushers scoring a touchdown.
"After the downpour we wanted to get the running game going a little bit," Eagles first year coach and Kathleen graduate Eric Gallon said. "I just want to be in the hunt for a playoff berth at season's end."
George Jenkins' last victory was two years ago against Tenoroc in the season finale.
The Eagles scored the only touchdown they would need one minute into the second quarter as quarterback Jaylen Odum scored from 1-yard out. The score was set up by a 46-yard run by Quenshawn Miller. Miller scored the Eagles' second touchdown, a 7-yard run with 37 seconds left in the half.
"The game of football has ebbs and flows, and a errant punt early in the game put us behind the eight ball," Thunder coach Steve Reynolds said. "We do not have any depth on the bench, so I was looking in the stands for fresh bodies."
Running back Trent Rains shook off the effects of a right leg injury as he rushed for 96 yards and had the Eagles' last touchdown, a 13-yard score in the third quarter.
Defensively, the Eagles allowed the Thunder only three first downs.
