Stingy Defense Against Ridge Community Helps Auburndale Pick Up First Win, 25-7

AUBURNDALE | Ridge Community came to Auburndale without a loss while the host Bloodhounds entered the contest without a win.

That all changed on Friday night at Bruce Canova Stadium.

The Bloodhounds set the pace early with a 66-yard touchdown run by Wilbur Cooper and the defense clamped down on the Bolts in a 25-7 win.

Kickoff was pushed back 40 minutes due to weather, but the delay didn't seem to bother Cooper who scored on the first play of scrimmage.

Cooper and teammate Derwin James carried the load for the Bloodhounds combining for 142 yards and three touchdowns on 24 carries. Auburndale finished with 183 yards on the ground and notched the win without completing a single pass.

"Last week they played Bloodhound football for four quarters. They played with tremendous effort," Auburndale head coach Kenny Grantham said. "This week, they executed and they did what they were told to do and when you add that together, we call that Bloodhound football."

Auburndale held Ridge to a dismal 86 yards of offense and just 2.2 yards-per-carry on the ground. Kailin Boatfield provided the pass rush for the Bloodhounds recording two sacks.

Ridge however, was able to hang around for much of the game. E'Shawn Davis, who scored the winning touchdown a week ago against Kathleen, tied the game midway through the first quarter with a 4-yard touchdown run. Davis' score came following a muffed punt that set the Bolts up at Auburndale's 2-yard-line.

The Bloodhounds were able to take a 13-7 lead into the locker room with the first of James' two touch­downs.

The score remained 13-7 until Auburndale put the game away when Daryle Henry returned an interception 64 yards for a touchdown.
