LAKELAND | Justin Henderson brooke loose for a 50-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and then Lake Wales turned the game over to its defense Friday night in a 17-0 victory over George Jenkins.
Henderson ran 11 times for a 133 yards and the Highlander defense held the Eagles to 31 yards and only one pass completion in the second half of their homecoming game.
Tate Mathewson kicked a 37-yard field goal and quarterback Railond Garrett ran 29 yards to a touchdown in the final minute for Lake Wales (2-2). But neither team accomplished much on offense before crowd of about 1,000.
"It was a nice win. We got a shutout," said Lake Wales coach Rod Shafer, "but we've got to get better on offense. Too many fumbles and penalties. Our defense was so good tonight that we got by."
George Jenkins (1-4) never got within 31 yards of a touchdown and gained a total of 131 yards.
The Eagles' best chances came in the first half, when Trent Rains ran 32 yards into Lake Wales territory and then Tanner Reeves recovered a Highlander fumble early in the second quarter. But Jenkins had to punt both times.
"We had some missed opportunities," said coach Eric Gallon. "Little mistakes here and there keep costing us. Our offense is still a work in progress."
George Jenkins travels to Wekiva next Friday. Lake Wales plays at Mulberry.
