BARTOW | Chris Perry jumped into the national spotlight during the summer with his solid play for Each 1 Teach 1, one of the premier AAU basketball teams in Florida.
He worked on his scoring and blocking against some of the best competition in the nation and came back with plenty of offers from Division I programs seeking his height — he's 6-foot-8 — and his big-man skills.
Tuesday night he made the decision to stay close to home, picking the University of South Florida.
"I have a good relationship with the coaches, and that basically was it," said Perry, a senior who averaged 14 points and 10 rebounds last year.
Terrence McGriff, his coach at Bartow, said getting Perry noticed was easy because of his height. But he also said he was thankful for a number of things during the process, including the fact that Perry stayed injury free.
"Thank the Lord for that, and for his mother and grandmother being so involved and the coaches and players for dealing with the craziness here over the last couple of weeks," McGriff said.
Perry chose USF over more than a dozen programs. He narrowed his list to five: Tulsa, Central Florida, Cincinnati, USF and Temple.
