Auburndale Finishes Strong For Homecoming Win Over Tenoroc, 35-6

AUBURNDALE | Auburndale erupted for 27 points in the fourth quarter to surge away from Tenoroc 35-6 Friday night in the Bloodhounds' homecoming game at Bruce Canova Stadium.

The Bloodhounds actually trailed 6-0 at halftime and held just a narrow 8-6 lead after three quarters.

In the fourth quarter, however, Auburndale came to life offensively. Derwin James scored on a 66-yard touchdown rush, Wilbur Cooper added touchdown runs of 65 and 19 yards and Wilshonn Jefferson scored a 56-yard touchdown on a fake punt.

Cooper and James each finished with 78 yards rushing to lead the Bloodhounds. Prior to Cooper's final two touchdown runs, the sophomore actually had rushed for minus-6 yards on five carries.

Returned blocked punts for touchdowns actually accounted for all the scoring for the first three quarters of football. Tenoroc's Vic Smith returned one 14 yards in the first quarter for the Titans' only score.

Kailin Boatfield gave the Bloodhounds their first points returning a blocked punt 16 yards in the third quarter.

After an 0-3 start, the Bloodhounds have now won two in a row and are 1-0 in Class 5A, District 9.

"We had a double whammy. We had an open week, and then we had homecoming", Auburndale head coach Kenny Grantham said. "Did it cause us to get distracted? Yes, but I'm not going to use that as an excuse."

The game got off to a late start because of the homecoming festivities.
