LAKELAND | Senior Caitlin Conner and junior Kali Boatwright had big performances as Lakeland rallied to defeat Durant in the Gold Division 8 title match at the Lakeland Invitational volleyball tournament at Lakeland High School on Saturday.
Despite falling in the first set 25-18, the Dreadnaughts came back to win the final two sets 25-18 and 15-9. It was the only set Lakeland lost during the tournament.
Conner led the way with 40 assists, five kills, and seven digs against Durant, while Boatwright contributed 19 kills and 11 digs.
"We just worked hard as a team," Boatwright said.
The score was tied at 15, before the Cougars took control of the first game by winning 10 of the next 13 points.
But that was all Durant could muster as Lakeland dominated the final two games to win the Gold Division.
"Everybody played well, (the) defense was great and we were executing on offense," Conner said.
Lakeland junior Lexi Hicks also had a strong game with 11 kills and six blocks, and senior teammate Sara Jayne finished with 11 digs.
"We gave 100 percent all weekend," Lakeland head coach Crystal Ramsey said. "I have a lot of girls that were sick, and it was very admiral the way we played with a lot of heart and fire."
Winter Haven won the Silver Division by beating Belleview in two games 25-17 and 25-21.
"It was an overall team effort and everybody played really well," Winter Haven coach Derrick Bennett said.
Key players for the Blue Devils were setters Ali Mann and Madison Speyerer.
Winter Haven dominated both games despite trailing 5-0 in the first game. The Blue Devils were without Katora Roberts, who sat out because of a head injury.
