SEBRING | George Jenkin's Chandler Jones kicked a 34-yard field goal that capped two Trent Rains rushing touchdowns to top Sebring, 17-14, in a homecoming game at Fireman's Memorial Field in Sebring on Friday night.
Jones hit the game winner off the left upright early in the fourth quarter that put the Eagle's lead just out of reach to hold off a Sebring comeback attempt.
The BlueStreaks actually led the Eagles in almost every offensive stat, except the most important, but ended four drives with a turnover.
Rains, the George Jenkins running back, led the Eagles with 76 yards on 10 rushes with touchdown runs of 1 and 2 yards.
After dropping the first three games of the season, George Jenkins (3-4) has won three of its last four. Rains said the team has grown together through a trying a season.
"I feel like we're jelling more (now)," Rains said. "I definitely feel like we are coming together as a true team."
Rains said the Eagles are now a playoff contender, but George Jenkins coach Eric Gallon isn't ready to talk playoffs.
"Heck, we are trying to win games one game at a time," Gallon said. "Coming from where we were in the beginning of the season to where we are now (I can see gains) … the guys are overcoming adversity and they're coming around."
George Jenkins will test their season turnaround next week at Class 7A, District 5 rival Lakeland. Sebring (1-5) travels to Winter Haven.
