Tremendous Ten: Athena Yang, Sam Horsfield Fire Their Way to State Tourney

1 -  Athena Yang, Winter Haven, and Sam Horsfield, Ridge Community: Were the lone Polk County golfers to qualify for the FHSAA state tournament last week at regionals. Yang shot an even-par 72 at Windermere Country Club in Orlando and Horsfield a 72 at Temple Terrace Golf & Country Club near Tampa. At the state tournament this week, Yang finished tied for third, and Horsfield finished tied for fourth.

2 - Ruby Lewis, George Jenkins: Ran a personal best 20 minutes, 24.79 seconds Saturday morning to claim the individual title at the 5K Polk County Cross Country Championships.

3 - McKeel's boys cross country team: Took first place in the Polk County Cross Country Championships on Saturday. It's the first time in school history a McKeel team has won the county title. Landon Schneider of George Jenkins won the individual title in 16:52.49.

4 - Shykeem Pitts, Ridge Community: The senior scored three times Friday to help Ridge clinch a playoff berth in Class 7A, District 5 with a victory over George Jenkins. Ridge will play Lakeland for the district title tomorrow.

5 - Kendall Gant, Lake Gibson: Blocked Kathleen's 42-yard field-goal attempt with 19 seconds remaining to preserve the Braves' 15-13 victory. The win gave Lake Gibson sole possession of the Class 6A, District 10 title. On video, it looked like Gant was offsides to start the play, but he wasn't called for it and the victory was set in stone when the time on the scoreboard struck zero.

6 - Dacorius Law, Haines City: Rushed for 245 yards on 24 carries Friday in a 34-29 loss to Lake Region. Law is close to eclipsing the 1,000-yard mark in rushing yards. He has 992 yards with two games remainin to play.

7 - Adam Lane, Winter Haven: The senior rushed for 190 yards on 27 carries in a 27-14 victory over Lake Wales. Lane will attempt to help Winter Haven seal a playoff berth in Class 6A, District 10 on Friday night when the Blue Devils face Bartow on the road.

8 - Nikki McKown, George Jenkins: Posted 17 kills and 20 digs last Thursday to help the Eagles claim the 7A-7 district volleyball title over Lakeland on Oct. 25. It was the third time this season Jenkins has defeated Lakeland.

9 - Charles Taylor, Auburndale: Ran for 166 yards and two scores Friday in a 39-0 win over Fort Meade. Teammate Wilbur Cooper also had a big game running the ball, rushing for 160 yards on 13 carries. Auburndale will play Lake Wales Friday for the Class 5A, District 9 title.

10 - Taylor Ashcraft, All Saints: Had 16 kills and four aces in two volleyball matches to help the Saints win the Class 2A-7 district title Thursday.
