Victory Christian came close to securing a playoff berth Monday night when it avenged an earlier season loss to Agape Christian, beating the Saints 6-0 to advance to the second part of a three-way tiebreaker in Winter Garden.
But the Storm failed to beat Foundation Academy later in the evening, losing 7-0 to end their season. Victory played a quarter of football against Agape and then waited 20 minutes to play one more quarter against Foundation, a team the Storm beat 28-20 on Oct. 28.
But Foundation got the best of Victory this time to secure the runner-up spot in Class 2A, District 4.
Victory beat Agape on a pass play with about 1:30 left. Sophomore Brice Ford ran a wheel route and Hunter Hotchkiss found him from about 20 yards out for the touchdown. On Agape's earlier drive, Terrance King and Ford had good pass coverage to stop the Saints' momentum.
Against Foundation, Victory's defense stopped the Lions on their first drive but couldn't muster much on offense on its own series, going three-and-out. Victory's defense almost came up with another stop when junior Chris Nelson nearly intercepted a pass. But the effort came up short and, Foundation scored one play later on a touchdown pass.
"It was a crazy, intense night," Victory coach Andre Dobson said. "Wish we would have won that last game but hats off to Foundation for putting that drive together."
