Four Polk County baseball players signed letters of intents with Division I programs Wednesday, including George Jenkins shortstop Dylan Allen, the 2012 PolkPreps.com Player of the Year.
Allen, who finished with a .455 batting average last year, signed with Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va. He held the ceremony Wednesday afternoon at the school with Chet Lemon, a former major league outfielder, in attendance. Allen plays for Lemon's summerball team, Chet Lemon's Juice.
Lemon was also at Lakeland Christian to watch outfielder Grant McKown and infielder Rafael Bournigal sign on the dotted line. McKown, 17, who signed to play for Florida Tech in Melbourne, also played on Lemon's summer team.
"We faced a lot of good pitchers, guys who were consistently throwing 90 mph," McKown said. "I think it really helped prepare me for what I'll see at the college level."
The 6-foot-2, 186-pound McKown batted .508 with two home runs and 18 RBIs as a junior.
Bournigal will play for Belmont University in Nashville. He visited the school on his sister's recommendation and liked it enough to commit. He plans to study finance there. For LCS last year, Bournigal batted .407 28 RBIs.
At Winter Haven earlier in the morning, Mitch Piatnik, a shortstop for the Blue Devils, signed with Stetson University. The 18-year-old said he got a full ride, part academic and part athletic, to attend the school, which is based in DeLand. He batted .374 last year with 10 RBIs and 37 hits.
