BRADENTON | The Lake Wales Highlanders advanced to the second round of the Class 5A playoffs after a exciting 20-17 victory over Bradenton Southeast in front of 600 fans at Joe Kinker Field Friday night.
The Higlanders (7-4) will host Palmetto next Friday night as Palmetto turned back the challenge of Auburndale 27-6. The Seminoles (8-3) had their five-game winning streak snapped.
With two minutes left and no time outs left, Southeastern got its punt return team ready but on the ensuing rush, the Seminoles were flagged for running into the punter that gave Lake Wales the first down and, after three kneel downs, the victory.
"We won the game, but I do not think we were better than them tonight," Highlanders coach Rod Shafer said. "We have had some big games with them (Southeast) over the years and just add this one to the list."
Special teams accounted for the first two scores as 90 seconds into the game Jordan Grabski came in untouched to block a punt and score a touchdown, but Lake Wales turned right around and blocked Grabski's punt for a safety.
The Highlanders running game started to click late in the first quarter as Earnest Hamilton and quarterback Railond Garrett led a 15-play, 84-yard drive that culminated in a 13-yard touchdown pass from Garrett to Dedric Brinson early in the second quarter.
"This team never gave up," Garrett said. " I give all the credit to the offensive linemen as they stayed with the assignments."
The Higlanders rushed for 170 yards in the contest with Earnest Hamilton leading the way with 60 yards and Tony Reeves adding 50 Senior kicker Tate Mathewson missed a 52-yard field goal in the third quarter but he gave Lake Wales the lead for good as he connected from 48 yards late in the third quarter.
