LAKELAND | Ronald Delph, a 6-foot-10, 230 pound center, didn't like the offers he received during his senior year playing basketball at Lake Region. So he opted this summer to attend IMG Academy, a sports academy in Bradenton that focuses solely on athletics. He did it to work on his game and get bigger and stronger. He also did it to increase his exposure so the bigger offers would come.
They did, and on Nov. 11 Delph chose to sign with Auburn over Miami, Cincinnati and Texas A&M.
"I had some offers from some Division I mid-majors and some low major schools, and that was about it," said Delph, who averaged 10 points and 10 rebounds last year at Lake Region.
"But I wanted an offer from a bigger school."
He got it.
Delph chose Auburn because he said he likes his chances of making an immediate impact next season.
"They're losing a lot of their big men, and it's just me and another 7-footer who signed. So I think if I can beat him out for a job, I can have a good chance of starting or getting lots of playing time," Delph said.
Delph said he also liked the campus. He plans to major in chemical engineering.
