WINTER HAVEN | In a back-and-forth contest, Winter Haven had the last shot at winning, but came up just a few yards short.
The Blue Devils' last minute drive ended at the Daytona Beach Mainland 29 where they could not convert a 46-yard field-goal try on the final play, and Mainland held on to beat the Blue Devils, 34-33, in the Class 6A regional semifinals at Denison Stadium.
The Blue Devils' last-minute drive followed Mainland's go-ahead touchdown with 1:13 to play on a 3-yard run by Jontey Byrd.
"Our kids competed to the end," Winter Haven coach Charlie Tate said. "They played well enough to win. We play well enough almost to win."
Winter Haven closes out the season 10-2. Mainland, 9-3, advances to the Class 6A regional final next Friday.
Kendrick Holland, who caught nine passes for 164 yards and two touchdowns, also returned an interception 93 yards for a go-ahead touchdown with 5:48 to play, but the Blue Devils failed on the extra-point try leaving them with a 33-27 lead.
Mainland's go-ahead touchdown was set up by a 33-yard pass from quarterback Cameron Hadley to Steve Bostick to the Blue Devil 3.
"They kept making plays all night," Tate said. "We had a hard time containing their quarterback."
Hadley passed for 280 yards and ran for 159. The Blue Devils were also hurt by three interceptions and two missed PATs.
"We were too charitable. You can't give the ball away that many times, and we missed our extra points," Tate said.
Trailing 20-14 at the half, Winter Haven took a 27-20 lead into the fourth quarter on a 39-yard run by Adam Lane and a 22-yard touchdown pass from Luke Borders to Kendrick Holland.
Mainland answered with a 3-yard touchdown pass from Hadley to David White tying the game, 27-27, with 10:30 left.
Mainland had 140 yards of offense by the first-quarter water break and finished the first half with 270 yards and a 20-14 lead. The Buccaneers needed less than three minutes to drive 65 yards for their first score, a 1-yard run on fourth-and-goal by Byrd with 9:44 left in the first quarter.
Hadley added an 11-yard run for the Buccaneers, and hit Jamal Hughes for a 13-yard touchdown pass with 32 seconds left to give them their 20-14 halftime lead.
Borders hit Holland for a 66-yard touchdown in the first quarter, and Darian Mills returned an interception 65 yards with 1:37 left in the half for a touchdown.
