FORT MYERS | Bartow guard Zykira Lewis scored more than her share of points Saturday, and none meant more than the final two.
Lewis dribbled from mid-court and drove all the way in for a lay-up at the buzzer of overtime, lifting the Yellow Jackets past the Freedom Patriots 49-47 in the Emerald Division finals of the Queen of the Palms tournament on Saturday night.
The Patriots tied the game at 44-44 with 1:12 left to play after Whitney Ivey hit two free throws. That turned out to be the last points of regulation.
Freedom was whistled for traveling with 10.3 seconds left in the first overtime period.
Then Lewis took over.
The senior had 26 points for the Yellow Jackets. Taylor Emery had 25 points for Freedom. Both Lewis and Emery were named to the all-tournament team.
"This was a great game for us. The girls responded beautifully to pressure," said Bartow coach Richard Murvin. "This was a game we needed, not just because it was for a championship. We needed to win a close game against a really good team."
The final play was a normal one for Bartow.
"That was typical inbounds-pass play that we run a lot," Murvin said. "Zykira is pretty much the best player on our team, and she just took over. She has a lot of speed, and just cut through everyone on the way to the basket."
Freedom got off to a 6-0 lead before a baseline jumper and 3-point goal by Lewis narrowed the lead to one. After sophomore center Bailee Wolfe connected on two consecutive free throws, the Yellowjackets trailed 10-9 after one period.
Bartow then began a 9-0 run to start the second frame to lead by eight.
The Yellow Jackets still led by five in the final minute of the first half before the Patriots rallied.
A 3-pointer and layup by Emery in the final 35 seconds sent the teams to the lockerrooms tied at 22-22.
The third quarter remained close. After consecutive fast break lay-ups by Lewis and Janique Seawell in the final minute, Bartow lead 38-35 after three were complete.
In another tournament game, Lake Wales beat Miami Northwestern High 38-29 for 7th place in the Sapphire Division.
