DAVENPORT | Kathleen boys soccer coach Michael Locke has been waiting for the Red Devils to stop trying to do things individually and work as a team.
In Tuesday's first-round Class 4A, District 7 contest against Lakeland, Locke got the effort he has been waiting for.
Kolen Roberts scored twice as Kathleen defeated Lakeland 4-1 at Bolt Field to advance to the district semifinals.
"I'm happy the way they played together," Locke said. "They finally came together. They made good passes. They just clicked. They put it together and put it in the net."
With the win, the Red Devils (17-5-1) will face Lake Region on Thursday at 6 p.m. for a chance to play in the finals.
In the second game, after blowing a two-goal lead, George Jenkins got a header by Collin Maisch with less than a minute left in double overtime to lift the Eagles to a 3-2 victory over Haines City.
With the victory, George Jenkins 11-10-1 will play top seed and host Ridge at 8 p.m. on Thursday.
Jenkins took a 2-0 lead on goals by Adolfo Peraza and Gabe Ferrer before Haines City got going.
Kenique Anderson buried a shot with eight minutes left to bring the Hornets to within one. With a little more than three minutes remaining, Withz Dayoute got behind the Eagles' defense and scored to force overtime.
The two played to a scoreless tie in the first overtime and it looked like the game was heading for penalty kicks before Maisch was able to head a crosser into the net.
Haines City finishes its season 10-7-2.
In the opening game, Kathleen used a couple of long balls to get an early lead.
Speedy Gildardo Mata got behind the Lakeland defense and punched the ball through the net 13 minutes into the contest. He also had two assists.
Some nifty passes got Roberts a clean shot and a goal with about 11 minutes left in the first half to make it 2-0.
Kathleen made it 3-0 after Mata was fouled in the box and Diego Rodea connected on the penalty kick. Rodea also added an assist in the game.
Lakeland cut the deficit to 3-1 after Wilbens Benoit was fouled in the box. Antonio Delabastide made the penalty kick to make it a two-goal deficit.
But Roberts got loose on a throw-in and connected on his second goal in what turned out to be the final margin.
"Kolen is a great player," Locke said. "He's a captain. He's a great player and he's very unselfish. If there's a shot to be taken that he thinks he can put in, then he'll take it. If he doesn't, he's just as happy to get the assist."
Josh Mata had an assist, while Terrance Bobet had five saves for the Red Devils.
