LAKELAND | With a team of almost all sophomores and freshmen, Santa Fe Catholic girls basketball coach Cari Murphy said she's seeing progress.
That progress showed Monday night when the Crimson Hawks defeated New Dimensions 64-28 in the first round of the Class 3A, District 7 tournament at Lakeland Christian.
Santa Fe Catholic will play top-seeded McKeel Academy tonight at 7 in the 3A-7 semifinals.
Host Lakeland Christian, the No. 3 seed, will face second-seeded Fort Meade at 5:30 p.m.
Kalecia Hawkins, the team's lone junior, led Santa Fe with 24 points. Sophomore Rosa Ancaya had 17 and sophomore Allison Hendon had 12.
"Those three have definitely been our leaders this year," Murphy said.
Hawkins became eligible in January and her presence has made a difference in the second half of the season, Murphy said.
"Rosa and Ally (Hendon) are our only two returning players," Murphy said. "Adding Kalecia has been a big boost."
Santa Fe, which had five freshmen among its nine players dressed, jumped out to a 10-0 lead that was never threatened in winning its fourth game of the season.
"For a young team, confidence is huge for them," Murphy said.
The Hawks (4-21) built their lead to 27-5 early in the second quarter and led 29-10 at the half.
Ancaya had 12 of her 17 points in the first half. In the second, Hawkins led the way scoring 18 of Santa Fe's 35 points.
"We've played really well the last half of the season," Murphy said. "We've seen our progress build quickly."
One indication of that is that Santa Fe Catholic split its two games with New Dimensions during the regular season with it's win coming by 10 points.
