HAINES CITY | Bartow overwhelmed George Jenkins, 67-16, and Haines City shut out Lakeland over the final three quarters Wednesday night to set up the anticipated matchup in the final of the Class 7A, District 7 girls basketball tournament.
In the second game, Jadeshia Johnson scored 16 of her 20 points in the first quarter for the second-ranked Hornets, who won, 64-5, after spending the second half practicing their floor game and rarely shooting.
"It didn't benefit us to run the score up," Haines City coach Ladreka Akins said. "It gave us an opportunity to work on our ballhandling and passing. We're just trying to learn something from every game.
"Lakeland did an excellent job to get to the second round, but we were maybe a little quicker than them."
The Hornets (22-4) will play ninth-ranked Bartow (19-9) in Friday night's district final. It will be their third meeting of the season, Haines City having won two close games.
"We match up pretty well against each other," said Bartow coach Richard Murvin. "It's one of those things where a play here or a play there will win it."
Wednesday night's games did not fit that description.
Chenya Sealy scored 16 of her 25 points in the first quarter for the Yellow Jackers, who jumped on George Jenkins, 27-0, in the opening period and led 51-2 at halftime.
The Eagles (8-16) could not handle Bartow's full-court press, turning the ball over 31 times in the first half. Dianta Walker came off the Bartow bench for 12 points. Jerrika Joyce added eight points, and Shanti Groover had seven points and six rebounds.
Ashley Dudney led George Jenkins with six points and Trinity Baxter had seven rebounds.
The only problem Bartow encountered was a shoulder injury to Zykira Lewis, who left the game early but returned in the second half.
Lakeland (10-15) got an early 3-point basket from Jade Bryant.
