Lake Gibson Finishes Strong to Grab Title

LAKELAND | The march to the FHSAA state tournament got off to a bit of a rough start for Lake Gibson, but in the end the Braves won their fourth consecutive district title and had nine Class 2A, District 6 individual champions.
The Braves trailed by 17 points heading into the final round to Auburndale, but the stellar finish put them on top with Auburndale taking second.
"I told the guys to not worry about the team points, we needed to do well in the finals to help with our seeds in the regional tournament," Lake Gibson coach Danny Walker said.
Lake Gibson senior Chase Krutzky continues his personal run for history. A week after becoming only the third wrestler in Polk history to win four consecutive individual county titles, he pinned all three opponents he faced in the first period to capture his fourth district title in a row. He defeated Winter Haven's Jacob Ewles in the 145-pound final.
Caleb Smith started off the finals on the right foot for Gibson, pinning Hunter Skinner of Auburndale in just 58 seconds in the 106-pound division.
At 113,the Braves' Seth Kelley, Lake Gibson, pinned Auburndale's Matthew Griesmer.
In other final matches for Lake Gibson, Sa'Derian Perry defeated Sebring's Nathan Franklin; , Kevin Jean Jacques defeated Auburndale's Devin Glenn at 138; Alex Desta pinned Winter Haven's Emilo Cruz at 152; Dorian Spradlin pinned Auburndale's Blake Alelln at 170; Jason Foster won a close 3-2 decision over kathleen's Del Baldwin, and David Rudd pinnded Auburndale's Scott Pendleton at 220.
The Bloodhounds grabbed an individual title when heavyweight Antonio Thomas (42-1) defeated Lake Region's Nick Longstreet of Lake Region.
Thomas led 1-0 heading into the third with top position. Longstreet managed to escape with 55 seconds left in the bout before taking a shot with under 20 remaining. Thomas sprawled in time and spun around Longstreet to take a 3-1 lead.
Auburndale's Glauberson Cojuste also won a district title with a 4-3 decision over Sebring's Christopher DeJesus,.
Lake Region's Vince Mott, Lake Region, was the only wrestler to defeat a Lake Gibson wrestler in the finals. He won a 5-2 decision over Jared Tarvin at 126.
Bartow's Brian Pennington of Bartow took a 7-0 lead before winning by pin over Auburndale's Hunder Dowdy at 132.
