TAMPA | The reigning Class 5A state champions will not be defending their title this week.
A week after a rallying from a 22-point deficit against Auburndale in the regional semifinals, Lake Wales was unable to come from behind again in a 97-72 loss to Tampa Jesuit in the Class 5A regional finals.
Douglas Brooks led the Highlanders with 19 points, Savonte' Frazier had 18 points, Marcus Dewberry scored 15 points and J'Quayveon Williams added nine.
"A lot of sweat and blood, tears on the line for going back to state, and obviously it's a tough way to end your season," first-year Lake Wales head coach Randy Lee said. "We never want to end it like this."
A sold-out Tampa Jesuit gym was rocking the entire 32 minutes of action. The Tigers went on a 7-0 run to start the game and never looked back. Senior forward Travis Johnson, a tight end who signed with Cincinnati, put on a sensational show in a 32-point performance. Shooting guards Jack Fleming and Joey Galvis combined for 38 points and Devin Harris added 15 for Jesuit.
The Highlanders couldn't get into a rhythm from the get-go, shooting themselves in the foot with 11 turnovers in the first quarter.
"Turnovers burned us," Lee said. "They came out early, we dug ourselves a hole."
A Shaka McGriff 3-pointer cut Jesuit's lead to 22-12 with 4:44 left in the second quarter, but the momentum stayed with the Tigers, who led 40-25 at halftime.
The Highlanders came out in the third quarter with renewed energy, turning up the tempo and intensity and playing with a sense of urgency and scoring some easy baskets inside. But Johnson was unstoppable, as were Fleming and Galvis, who knocked down 3 after 3.
Lake Wales trailed 69-49 at the end of the third quarter, and frustration spilled over into the fourth. There was head shaking and there were technical fouls. By the time Lee called a timeout with 3:08 remaining, the Highlanders looked somber and defeated.
