LAKE WALES | Orlando Christian Prep senior point guard Justice Montgomery helped put the final dagger in Vanguard's season with 11 points — seven of those in a closely contested fourth quarter — as OCP defeated Vanguard 42-38 in front of a packed house Saturday night in the Class 2A regional finals.
Orlando Christian Prep moves on to play in the state tournament held next week at The Lakeland Center.
"It came down to Justice (Montgomery). He was the difference in the game," Orlando Christian head coach Reggie Kohn said.
Montgomery and company found plenty of ways to trail in the start of quarters — going down by as many as six to start the fourth following five points from Cyril Popotte. However, scrappy defense and second-chance points pulled them back to a manageable deficit.
"(Going into the fourth) I told the guys ‘lucky we have eight minutes,'" Kohn added. "The tougher team has to win, the tougher team has to play these last eight minutes. We were fortunate to make enough plays. I didn't think we were very good tonight and we have to give them (Vanguard) a lot of credit."
The Warriors grabbed the final lead (38-36) of the contest following a Montgomery 3-pointer with 2:42 left in regulation.
Before the Montgomery trey, the previous four points came on second-chance baskets. In the second half alone, Orlando Christian Prep pulled down 11 offensive boards — many of those leading to points.
The Panthers fought their way back to a tie (38-38) with 47 seconds to play. Thierry Frederic hit two free throw chances during the bonus.
But Montgomery and his four free throws in the final quarter proved too much for Vanguard.
Vanguard center Sullivan Hernandez had 10 points in the first quarter, and managed to end the night with eight. He also had 10 rebounds.
Popotte shot 3-for-3 from the field, including two from beyond-the-arc, to finish with nine points.
